My former colleague and collaborator at Apple, Bonnie Nardi, has done some interesting research on blogging. I really liked Why We Blog [PDF], which was a study of various people and why they started and continued to maintain their blogs. We read that paper in a couple of classes I taught and students enjoyed it. I think that was probably one of the first real studies of blogging. Bonnie has another article on blogging, Blogging as Social Activity, or, Would You Let 900 Million People Read Your Diary? [PDF] which is also worth reading.
